What does a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) do?
Provide basic patient care under direction of nursing staff. Perform duties such as feed, bathe, dress, groom, move patients, or change linens. May transfer or transport patients. Includes nursing care attendants, nursing aides, and nursing attendants.
CNAs make up the largest portion of the direct care workforce in the Unites States, followed by home health aides (HHAs). While HHAs work in the home-setting, CNAs in direct care will typically work in nursing homes, groups homes, assisted living facilities, or other community-based facilities or health institutions.
Typical Education
CNA’s need one semester of lecture (class) paired with clinical hours. A certification is done with a state test after completing the course and hours.
Required Skills
Basic nursing skills are required to be a CNA, such as good bedside manners, clear communication, and collaboration with other nursing staff.
Typical Tasks
The CNA falls under the delegation of a LPN or RN. Typical tasks include bed baths, feeding, linen changes, hygiene care, assistance with activities of daily living, etc.
