Do you have an interview coming up, and want to make sure you leave a positive, lasting impression?  Follow these tips to shine in the eyes of the employer, during and after the interview!

1. Study the job description

If the job posting or description is available to you, take some time understanding the details of the position and what strengths, knowledge, and skills are needed to be successful in this position.  The employer will want to hear how you can successfully accomplish this.

2. Research the company

Nothing is worse than going into a job interview and not knowing anything about the company or organization you are hoping to work for!  Researching the company is an important part of the interview process, as it allows you to prepare for any questions that may be company related, and it also helps guide some of the questions you can ask at the end of your interview.  Having a solid understanding of the company and what they stand for shows the employer how serious and prepared you are for this job.

3. Prepare your interview outfit

You don’t want to wait until the last minute to make sure you’ve got the proper clothes for your interview.  No matter what type of job you are going for, you want to make a great first impression.  This starts with how you’re dressed!  Business professional attire is always appropriate, with your shirt and pants or the dress you’re wearing free of wrinkles.  Make sure your shoes are cleaned – (yes, they will be noticed), and verify your accessories are not too distracting.  Remember: less is more when it comes to hair and make-up, and it goes without saying one must be well-groomed to present a positive image to the employer.

Do not assume talking more is better than listening.  They are both equally important!  It’s easy to only focus on what you’re going to say next, as opposed to actually listening to what’s being said from the other person.  It’s ok to think and take a little time before you respond- ensure you’re apart of the conversation, and not just spewing out answers.  Be prepared to engage with the interviewer, and ask questions of your own.  An interview is just as much about building a working relationship as it is answering questions.

6. Follow up with a thank you note

Nothing leaves a better lasting impression than sending a thank you note following up your interview.  Thank them for taking the time to speak with you about this position, and express your genuine interest.  You’ll want to remind them why you want the job, and even add a small note why you would be the best person for the job.  Thank you notes are welcomed by everyone, and sadly are rare in this day and age.  Taking a few minutes to do this simple act is a great way to complete the interview process, and hopefully you’ll receive good news in re
