Applications can be tedious, and stressful!  Whether you are applying to college or looking for a new job, the completion of an application is never an easy component of the process.  Here are some tips and tricks to consider when filling out that laborious application, and hopefully it will help in landing you acceptance into the school of your choice, or that position you are chasing after!

  1. Understand what is being asked of you

Each and every application is different; you wouldn’t send the same application to every school you’re applying for, nor would you do the same for jobs you are attempting to get.  The majority of positions will have specific requirements and skills needed for the job, so you want to address those- even in the process of filling out the application!  Make sure you understand clearly what the employer or the school is looking for.

  • Match yourself to the job or school description

It’s important to really look at the in-depth job description first, before you write your application.  What are the responsibilities you will hold, and how can you discuss previous roles where you’ve done similar things?  The most important part in completing your application is showing the employer or the school you are competent enough to fulfill this need, or attend this school.

  • Get to the point

Be concise when completing your application; you don’t need to over-explain and give multiple examples for every skill you list.  One example per proficiency is usually enough, and it’s not necessary to keep explaining why it’s relevant, either.  You will be sharing a lot of information in your cover letter or personal statement, so make sure you’ve written everything you need to on your application without any unnecessary details.

  • Double-check that your contact information is correct

This seems so simple, but is often a mistake that is overlooked!  It’s easy to copy and paste your contact information in multiple applications, so verify your address, phone number, and email address is up-to-date before doing so.

  • Draft and redraft

It’s a good idea to check your application at least a couple of times before sending it in.  It’s even better to have someone else review your application, because often times another set of eyes can see something perhaps you have missed.

  • Apply with plenty of time to spare

It may be tempting to hold off on submitting your application so you have time to check and re-check what you’ve written.  However, if there are a large number of applicants they will sometimes close early.  Be sure to apply with plenty of time to spare!
